Earl Delroy Edwards was born to Walter G. Edwards and Albina E. Campbell, on October 15, 1928, in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Affectionately known as “Roy”, he was an energetic, athletic child who excelled at track and field at Calabar Elementary School (now High School). He was also a member of the Boy Scouts.
He was an avid sports fan. He especially loved bowling travel leagues, basketball (Orlando Magic), Tennis, and Football (Washington Commanders).
After immigrating from Jamaica to New York around 1954, Roy attended night school, earning a certificate in X-Ray Theory and Practice from the New York University Division of General Education in 1956. Roy married Shirley Smith on August 12, 1961.
He moved to Washington, DC after accepting a position as a Bookbinder at the Government Printing Office (GPO). He worked the night shift and loved it. His excellent work ethic led to consistently outstanding evaluations. When training future Bookbinders, he would let them know, there’s only one way to do it - the right way. He worked at GPO for 37 years until he and Shirley retired to Florida in 1996. In retirement, they enjoyed traveling. They cruised the Caribbean and visited Europe in 2007. He loved to go to Las Vegas on vacation and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Roy was always mechanically inclined. Before cars were computerized, he could perform his car repairs. His nickname was “Mr. Fix It” because he could fix almost anything. And if he couldn’t fix it immediately, he would tinker with it until he figured it out. This spoke to his “can do” spirit! He also acquired his tailoring skills from his seamstress mother.
Forever the storyteller, Roy would regale his children with Jamaican ghost stories.
He was an Acolyte at St. George’s Anglican Church in Jamaica. Roy loved the Lord and never failed to thank Him daily for His goodness and kindness.
Roy was a jovial person who loved people and could start a conversation with anyone! He loved to laugh and joke around. When asked about his longevity, he would respond that a positive attitude was the key. He also enjoyed playing the piano and was an avid Jazz fan.
Roy quietly departed this life on Saturday, January 11, 2025. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Shirley, daughter, Synthia (Larry), grandson, Jordan, several in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He will be missed. Rest in peace.
