Sister Florence Thompson Jones was born October 27th, 1925, to Ellen and James Thompson in La Cieba, Honduras and was the seventh of ten children. Ellen and James Thompson and their young family were faithful members of the La Cieba SDA Church. Florence emigrated to the United States in 1957 and became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 5 years as was required at that time. At the New York Hospital, Florence established herself as a reliable, hard working and dedicated operating room technician and caregiver.
She became an active member of the City Tabernacle Church where she was an usher for many years.
She met and married a fellow usher Willie Jones, a native of Tennessee. In 1977 Sister Jones was nominated Lay Activities Secretary of the Jamaica SDA Church. She served in this capacity until 2002, for a total of 25 years. Florence and Willie Jones enjoyed a loving relationship as they devoted their lives to the service of God and their fellow man. Willie Jones fell asleep in the service of the Lord in 1996.
Sister Jones also enjoyed being a choir member as well as serving as a board member for several years. Involvement with the Community Pantry Program was another of her passions. In 2015, she was an active member of the Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration of the Jamaica SDA Church. She single handedly raised over $1,000.00 for the event! Sister Jones enjoyed walking regularly and often walked the five miles from her home to the church, rain or shine.
A commitment she took seriously, was the pivotal role she had in helping to rear her sister Myrtle Parson’s seven children. She loved them with a strong motherly love, and they all lovingly referred to her as “Aunt Flor.” Her loving influence, prayers and encouragement made a remarkable difference in their lives.
On June 19, 2019, just before the Pandemic, Sister Jones left New York to live in Maryland with her niece Meleen Cort and her family, Wilbur, Adam and Matthew. She was always very independent and lived a very disciplined life. After a short illness she fell asleep on July 27, 2025, at 11:45 pm at the wonderful age of 99 years and 10 months. “Be Faithful” was the phrase she used to admonish her nieces and nephews.
Sister Jones was often asked for the secret of her longevity and good health. Her answer: Service to the Lord; Stay active; And temperance in all things.
She leaves behind 1 nephew; 4 nieces; 3 grand nieces; 5 grand nephews; 4 great nieces; 4 great nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
….be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Rev 2:10
