Fred L. Suggs

Fred Louis Suggs was born the second of twelve children to Fred Suggs and Hattie Barrow Suggs on July 9, 1937 and departed this life on Saturday, September 9, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, five brothers, and an infant son. He leaves behind his wife of fifty-two years, Alice Chestnutt Suggs; two sons, Clayton L. Suggs (his friend, Sarah) of Manassas, VA; Jeremy F. Suggs (Rebecca) of Wyndmoor, PA; and three grandchildren, Jay, Kayla, and Andre. He is also survived by one sister, Hattie Shambles of Greenville, NC; four brothers, William Henry Suggs (Jean) of Scuffleton, NC; Ernest Suggs (Della) of Farmville, NC; Roland Suggs (Hattie Ruth) of Greenville, NC; Albert Suggs (Ernestine) of Hanover, MD; twenty-nine nieces and nephews; a great aunt, Mable Miller of Maury, NC; and one brother-in-law, Melvin Chestnut of Farmville, NC. Fred accepted Christ at an early age during a week-long revival service at his home church. He grew up being taught the Bible at home and being immersed in church activities and community benevolent projects. After marriage, he continued to be active in the church, especially through the choir ministry at Union Baptist Church in Durham, NC. After relocating to Rockville, MD in 1971, Fred joined Montrose Baptist Church where he served in the music ministry (choir and praise team), served as a deacon, and participated in home Bible studies and outreach witnessing programs, including two mission trips to Brazil. Fred loved interacting with those around him. He loved to pray, and his belief that Jesus is the only way to Salvation compelled him to witness to family, friends, and neighbors through a personal evangelistic ministry. He also recruited and disciples co-workers through lunch-time Bible studies. He retired in 1996 after 33 years with the Federal government. We love you, Fred, and we did our best for your comfort.
