George Salmon repeated this refrain so often over the years that the words came to define him as a man of integrity, industry and kindness. In the early morning hours of April 15, 2022 George Salmon peacefully fell asleep in Jesus.
Born on October 28, 1932 to George Logan Salmon and Adeline Loraine Moxam Salmon of Newell in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, George was the Third of eight children with siblings Christine, Clarence, Caswell, Edna, Gloria, Audley, and Joyce.
In his youth, George loved to climb trees, ride horses and race bicycles, earning the nickname “The Flying Saucer” for his skill and speed. At a young age George’s life would dramatically change when his father died suddenly, as he took on family responsibilities beyond his years. His uncle Stanley Moxam would become a surrogate father figure for the rest of his life. His elder cousin Sylvan would become as close to George as any of his brothers.
George met and married the love of his life, Hortense Smith, creating a union that would last 64 years until her death in 2018. The Salmon’s immigrated from Jamaica to the United States in 1966, raising their family in Maryland. A large structure steel fabricator, George had a mind for mathematics and an eye for detail, taking as much pride in his craftsmanship as in his prolific garden.
George leaves a legacy that will be continued through his loving family. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hortense Salmon and daughter Vivienne Salmon. His surviving children, Verleta (Leroy) Salmon Green, Michael A. (Yolanda) Salmon, Cheryl H. (Garrett) Caldwell, Georgina Jacqueline Salmon; grandchildren; Tanya Douglas, Sheldon (Carlene) Green, Simone (Dwayne) Blackwood, Geoffroy (Yauna) Green, Garrett (Zulma) Caldwell, Jr. Tiffani Caldwell, Ariel Salmon, Caitlin Salmon, and Nathan Salmon.
True to the words of his often repeated refrain, George took on the many tasks of leading and loving his family. Some of the tasks were great and some were small, but all were done well.
