Thinking of Gerry on the third anniversary of his passing.  I first met him 36 years ago, and I have nothing but good memories of our association.  Rest in peace, Gerry!

He was a wonderful companion.  We all miss  him .  We took our “It’s Academic!” Teams to tournaments together and he made it so much fun.

I cannot believe 2 years have passed already ! Gerry is missed by so many and I think about him often . He was my second dad growing up with Tracey.  Sending many hugs to him in heaven ! 🤗🤗🤗🤗

Remembering Gerry on the second anniversary of his passing.   It is hard to believe that two years have gone by.

  I was involved in coaching academic teams at Walter Johnson and Montgomery Blair High Schools. Those teams faced Eleanor Roosevelt's teams any number of times, and the matches were always spirited.  What I remember about Gerry is that, win or lose, he was always gracious. He was a class act, a man who, by example.  showed that it WAS important how the game was played. 

He continues to be missed.

Gerry was a spirited teacher and coach.  His and my team traveled together— a particular trip I remember is “Opryland”!  We had si much fun and the venue really brought out his wry sense of humor. 

I loved working with him!!

When I started coaching the Walter Johnson It's Academic team in 1989, one of the first people I met was Gerry.  Gerry was one of the nicest people I got to know, and that is saying something in the world of academic team coaching.  He was the It's Academic head coach at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, and he had a powerful team.  Our WJ-ER teams put on some great competitions, and when I took over coaching the Montgomery Blair Academic team in 1994, great ER-Montgomery Blair competitions ensued.
 There were only a few coaches I would call friends- Gerry was one. Through it all, Gerry was always a gentleman and an example of what a quality coach/human being should be.  I will miss him.

Mr Greenbaum  was a real treasure to the Roosevelt Class of 1982. A real guide and mentor as our faculty advisor. We all think of him fondly whenever we get together. 

He was also a great teacher. Thanks for getting us up in front of the class to do math problems. It made everyone more involved and prepared.

I am very sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. I was a member of Gerry's "It's Academic" team at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in the early 1980s. He was an amazing sponsor and a huge part of the success of our team and those which came before and after. He was also a great friend and supporter to the team members.  I offer my sincere condolences to his family. 

My friend Gerry Greenbaum passed away earlier this month at age 77. Those of you who played quiz bowl in the DC area knew Mr. Greenbaum as the longtime—well over 30 years, actually—It’s Academic coach at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt. And for most of that time, Mr. Greenbaum each year hosted the largest off-camera It’s Academic tournament in Maryland history: regularly at 64 schools and more from the Baltimore-Washington region, all competing against each other in a single grueling all-day Saturday competition until one team won it all. But I knew Gerry Greenbaum as one of the greatest DC-area It’s Academic coaches in the show’s 63-year history: his Eleanor Roosevelt teams were perennially among the best—and best prepared—squads year after year… and he was one of only a handful of coaches ever to win three or more Washington-Area Championships. In one of the greatest quiz bowl runs ever, Mr. Greenbaum took his 1987-88 team—which had been uncharacteristically eliminated from the It’s Academic TV tournament in the quarterfinals that year—to New Orleans in the Spring and prepped, cajoled, and inspired his Eleanor Roosevelt team as they blew away the 72-school field to win the National Quiz Bowl Championship. Mr. Greenbaum’s Eleanor Roosevelt players were also frequent members of TEAM MARYLAND—the six-student state all-star academic team that competed each June at the Panasonic Academic Challenge at Disney World—and included Julie Singer (starter on the 1996 National Championship team), Vinita Kailasanath (starter on the 1998 National Championship team, captain of the 2000 National Championship team, and later the College Jeopardy Champion), and Peter Nilson (starter on the 2002 National Championship team). Gerry was a superb math teacher, a legendary quiz bowl coach… and my friend and mentor. I will miss him greatly.

Grateful for so many great memories, this one an outing in Maryland with Gerry, Phyllis, Tracey, Josh and me. 

Gerry will be missed so much , by so many ! He was like  my  second dad after I became best friends with Tracey .  He was a wonderful father to Tracey and Josh ,  had a heart of gold and  was full of life !  He’s now a guardian Angel to many ! I’ll miss him dearly . 

I am sorry to hear of Gerry's passing.  I first met him 25 years ago at one of his academic tournaments at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, and he was a great mentor and friend to me over the decades that followed.  His generosity of spirit and enthusiasm for knowledge benefitted generations of students.  I will miss him.

I’m so sorry to learn this. Gerry’s “It’s Ac” team and mine did a lot together. Most notably we went to Nashville together.  He was so fun to be with and a great coach!  

I am saddened knowing that I won’t see him again.  He was so generous and and gracious.
