Born in Flushing, New York to Dr. Elmer and Mrs.(Matilda) Fisher Lerner on 12/3/47. He spent his childhood growing up in Lebanon, PA.
Joel was loving, kind, humorous, witty, and had a strong-willed personality. Always up for a spontaneous adventure with his friends or a roadtrip/travel with his wife; he was extremely fond of just spending time at home with his family and his dog Sasha.
He was a fan of the simple pleasures in life and both wanted and did live his life on his own terms. He was particularly proud of completing the Marine Corp Marathon as well as others.
In his professional career as a landscape designer, Joel created the concept of Lernscaping™ , a unique system of design matching homeowners to their properties, and was a founding member of APLD, teacher, author, speaker, TV and radio personality. President of Environmental Design, he became a nationally recognized garden communicator and personality for both professionals and homeowners. His Green Scene column appeared in the Washington Post weekly for 11 years.
He is survived by his wife Sandy of 53 years, brother Lewis, son Jason, granddaughter Amarise, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
