Lucille Baker was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1929 to immigrant parents. Her mother was born in the US but her father was a Russian immigrant. Growing up in a small modest apartment during the depression wasn’t easy. She met Irving Baker in her late 20’s and they married and relocated to Greenbelt, Maryland. After a few years in Greenbelt, they moved to Adelphi and raised their 2 children, Carrie, and Les. She worked various jobs as a bookkeeper through the years. Once retired she took on the job of “grandma” and babysat her grandchildren when needed.
Family was everything to her. There was always room at the table for one more and she loved having family and friends around her. Everyone who knew her, loved her and she touched everyone’s lives. She always had something witty, sassy, or funny to say. Even in her later years, she never lost her sense of humor. She would tell jokes, and stories and always made everyone feel loved and accepted.
Most of all, she would give you the shirt off her back. If you ever told her you liked something of hers, be prepared to take it home. Anyone that came into her home was asked the same question, “Can I get you anything?” and even when she wasn’t in her own home, she’d ask those around her “Can I get you anything?”.
The strength and courage she showed throughout her journey with cancer (4 types, I have to say) and Leukemia Lymphoma was amazing. She didn’t want anyone to worry about her. She was always concerned about everyone else. Even in the end, she fought long and hard through the complications.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
As you say mom- “Send my love!”
