Mark Haugen Loberg was born to parents,John Edward Loberg and Laura Alfreda Weens Loberg, at the Black Hills General Hospital in Rapid City South Dakota on August 28, 1946. Mark was the fifth and youngest child in his family who lived in Hill City, South Dakota, where his father was the President of the Rushmore State Bank, a bank that was founded by Mark’s father in the same year as Mark’s birth.
Mark spent his earliest years in Hill City until 1951 when his family moved for a year to Canton, South Dakota before settling in Napa, California, where Mark started the First Grade in school and went through to graduation from Napa High School in 1964.
Mark then attended Napa Valley College for 2 semesters before transferring to the University of Puerto Rico where his oldest brother, John, was serving in the US Army as an Instructor in Military Science. After a year of college in Puerto Rico, Mark transferred to his father’s alma mater, Augustana College, in Sioux Falls South Dakota, and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Drama in 1968. Mark then continued his education in the Graduate School in Media at San Francisco State University. After earning his Master’s Degree, Mark went on to further graduate studies in media at the University of Indiana, Bloomington. Mark then accepted a position in Health Education Media at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco where he served until 1995 when the Army Medical Center in San Francisco closed, and Mark was then transferred to work in media services at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
When Mark moved from Napa, California to Silver Spring, MD to work at Walter Reed Medical Center, he found housing at an apartment complex on Piney Road that would turn out to determine the course of the rest of his life. It was here, when catching the bus to work, that Mark met Ms. Tructhuc (Titi) Hoang, the young lady that would become Ms. Mark Loberg, Titi, the mother of Mark’s four children, Patrick Mark Loberg, Amy Michelle Loberg, Paul Haugen Loberg, and Phillip Joseph Loberg. Mark’s family was his greatest source of pleasure, delight, and pride. It was just not possible to give Mark a gift of any kind, or for any occasion, because Mark would always give a gift meant for him, to Titi or one of his children.
After several years at Walter Reed, Mark was given the opportunity to work as a disability advocate for Federal Employees at USAID, the Federal Agency responsible for administering the US Programs supporting international development. Mark retired as a Federal Employee from this assignment.
Mark’s favorite social and recreational activity, beyond his devotion to his faith and his family, was reading, writing, and discussing politics. He was no doubt inspired by his opportunity to be a volunteer reporter for his local newspaper at the 1964 Republican Convention in San Francisco in 1964. That strong interest in politics remained a passion throughout Mark’s life, and one of his frequent ploys was to try to steer any topic of conversation around to his great love, “talking politics.” He was very partisan, a “rib rock Republican,” and for the last 20-30 years, increasingly conservative. But, he remained kind, gentle, and thoughtful toward his listeners and opponents. One of his most important mentors for his strong pro-life position was Father Patrick Kinney (retired and deceased) a very close friend and a Chaplain at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Mark H. Loberg is survived by his wife, Titi, their four children, Patrick, Amy, Paul and Phillip, Mark’s brother, L. Pierce Loberg and wife Miriam Dodd Loberg of Yosemite, and their four children, Steven, Scott, Lori, and Lisa, his sister Laura Dawn Loberg Doscher of Rockville, MD, and his brother, David E. Loberg, and his children Michal Loberg and Abigail Loberg Howard, all of Napa, California. Mark’s parents, John and Laura Loberg, and his oldest brother Lt. Col. John C. Loberg (ret), as well as his sister-in-law, Lucy Loberg, predeceased Mark.
Plans for Last Rites for Mark are pending and will be arranged by his family in Silver Spring, Maryland.
