On Thursday, April 30, 2020, almighty God in His infinite wisdom and grace, called our beloved husband and father Obie Lorenza Logan into eternal rest. Obie was the fourth eldest born to the late Millard Logan and Queenie Bennett Logan.
He took his first breath of life on June 7, 1930 in Halifax, Virginia.
Obie began his walk with the Lord at an early age. In 1940, at the age of 10, he was baptized and joined the fellowship of the family’s home church, Elkhorn Baptist Church in Halifax County, VA. Seeking better career opportunities, he moved to the District of Columbia, where he united with the Capital View Baptist Church, Washington, DC, in 1953, under the pastoralship of Reverend Andrew Fowler. Obie was a faithful member for more than fifteen years, and gave of his time, talents and resources as he worked to further the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
Because he was an industrious and conscientious worker who loved his family and fellow man, he typically worked two jobs to provide for the needs of his family and to give back to his community. Obie was a dedicated employee of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, water utility company. He spent 30 years there employed as an Environmental Engineer. He became the company’s first African American supervisor and led a staff of over 19 employees. He enjoyed his career immensely and received many awards and accolades during his tenure.
Moreover, Obie was happiest when he was spending time with his family. He was an attentive and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, and was blessed to have the sincere love of his family in return, celebrating 89 years of birthdays, family reunions, weddings, graduations, anniversaries, and holiday gatherings. He rarely ever missed one. Obie traveled the world with his wife Amanda “Peggy” Virginia Logan, enjoying 50 years of blissful marriage, having formed this union under the tutelage of Rev. Fowler. In 1970, they joined Colesville United Methodist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland where he and Peggy were members, regularly tithed and donated.
Obie was an avid hunter, fisherman, 32nd Degree Mason, and storyteller; and amazed the family, time and time again, with many entertaining and educational stories about his life growing up and the friends whose lives that he touched in special ways, many whom he spoke with weekly, up to the time that he transitioned to be with the Lord. Very often he shared with all of us that, “For a poor country boy, I have had the true and endearing love of my family, the opportunity to see many places, and do many things that I never could have envisioned as a youngster, nor ever thought I would experience or have knowledge of in my lifetime. So, if I pass on, today or tomorrow, it is well with my soul”.
Obie was predeceased by his five siblings, Hilda Harris, Mildred Bethea, Madison Logan, Youelle Logan, and John Logan. He leaves to cherish his precious and wonderful memories, a loving and devoted family; his wife and best friend of 50 years, Amanda “Peggy” V. Logan; three daughters, Mary Louise Simpson, Neila Logan Gunter, and Stephanie Renee Ross; four sons, Langston Duvall Logan (Joyce), Dwayne Sheldon Logan (Constance), Clarence Leroy Ross, and Edison Nelson Ross (Alexis); five granddaughters, Ilyasah Simpson, Nikeva Gunter (Tracey), Brittney Logan, Qadeemah Simpson, and Candice Logan; six grandsons, KyuccaAli Simpson, Khadeem Simpson, Langston Logan Jr., Geary Gunter II (Nadine), Jessie Logan, and Jared Logan; 12 great grandchildren; and one sister, Chrystine Dawkins (Harold), cousins David Dixon, Doretha Dixon Gay(Willis), and Arlene Bradley; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including devoted friends Thomas and Bessie Cook, and Larry and Alice Hyman.
We will never forget Obie’s love and spirit. We will treasure and remember all of the memories he has left. Obie L. Logan will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He will always have a permanent place in our hearts.
