Robert Wayne Newcomb, born June 27, 1933, in Glendale, California, beloved son of Robert Dobson and Dorothy Opal Newcomb, husband of Sarah Eleanor Newcomb, brother of late sisters, Helen and Marian Newcomb, father of daughter Gail Newcomb and late son Robert Whitney Newcomb, passed away peacefully at home on April 18, 2026.
Professor Newcomb pursued a distinguished career in electrical engineering, earning multiple degrees from distinguished universities and awards in his field. His research spanned a remarkable range of areas. He served on the faculty of Stanford University and the University of Maryland, where he was a dedicated educator and mentor. Over the course of his career, he supervised more than 70 Ph.D. students and mentored many undergraduate and high school students,
Throughout his life, Professor Newcomb was devoted to his family and took great pride in the life they built together. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah Eleanor; his daughter, Gail; his granddaughter, Jessica; his great-granddaughter, Mariah; and his son-in-law, Ted.
Professor Newcomb will be remembered for his extraordinary intellect, his pioneering contributions to engineering and science, his dedication to teaching, and his enduring love for his family.
