In loving memory of Mrs. Suet Sin Chiu, a resilient and beloved cornerstone of our family, who gracefully completed her life's journey on December 6, 2023, reaching the remarkable age of 100. Born on October 7, 1923, in Fuzhou, China, to her devoted parents, including her beloved mother, Chau Si Yeung, with whom she shared an extraordinary bond, Mrs. Suet Sin Chiu's life unfolded across continents and generations.
Mrs. Suet Sin Chiu epitomized quiet strength, independence, and enduring love throughout her rich life. Leaving her homeland for a better life with her children, she embraced the challenges and opportunities of building a new home in Washington D.C. which became a haven of warmth and culture, a sacred space where family legacy, heritage, and traditions were lovingly passed down through generations.
Devoted to her family, Mrs. Suet Sin Chiu was a beacon of love as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Renowned as the most joyful soul at family gatherings, she immersed herself in shared moments, quietly smiling and savoring the laughter and camaraderie that enveloped the room. Her mere presence served as the adhesive that bound her family together, emphasizing the importance of connection and rootedness.
Mrs. Suet Sin Chiu is also remembered for her culinary expertise which served as a living connection to our ancestry. Meticulously crafted Fuzhou fish balls, golden battered spareribs, fluffy steamed buns, and sticky rice in bamboo leaves (zongzi) graced our dinner tables, each dish carrying the weight of the rich heritage she lovingly preserved. Beyond her role as a nurturing matriarch, Mrs. Suet Chiu found solace in her hobbies, such as knitting and Fuzhou opera. She also enjoyed long walks and having her portraits taken. Residing in D.C. Chinatown for over four decades, Mrs. Suet Chiu discovered immense pleasure in socializing with friends, finding a sense of belonging and contentment within the bustling atmosphere and rich cultural tapestry of the community. She radiated a vibrant zest for life.
Mrs. Suet Sin Chiu was preceded in death by her husband, James Li Yang Jen, and her dear brother, affectionately known as Yee Haw. She is survived by her sister, Chiu Mei Sin, and her three children: Julia (Ping) Cheung, Betty (Benny Siu) Yam, and Sam Yam. Her memory lives on through her five grandchildren: Anthony (Brenda) Cheung, Jennifer (Sam) Hong, Sarah (Dominick) Pham, Eric Siu, and Angela Yam, as well as her six great-grandchildren: Ryan Cheung, Katie Cheung, Maxwell Hong, Astrid Pham, Lucas Hong, and Rylee Pham.
