Janet E Powers

SKOWHEGAN - Janet E. Powers died May 31, 2015 in Skowhegan surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 19, 1936 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the eldest daughter of John T and Marjorie A. (Gould) Somerville. She was educated in Maine and Connecticut, graduating from Norwich Free Academy, Norwich, Connecticut in 1954.

Janet was a homemaker most of her life. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and cross stitch. She also enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to travel and enjoyed every trip she took. One of her greatest pleasures was singing and performing on stage at Lakewood Theater.

Janet was a member of the Federated Church in Skowhegan since 1967. She sang in the choir for over 36 years and directed the Junior Choir for a few years. She was also a Sunday School teacher and the Sunday School Superintendent for a few years. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout Leader when her children were young.

Janet married Elton (Mickey) Powers on September 28, 1968. She is survived by her husband; three sons, Jonathan, Jeffrey and his wife Pamela, Matthew Powers; one daughter, Barbara Goodman and her husband Douglas; and two step-daughters, Sonja Schmanska and her husband David, and Dorothy LaCasse and her husband Barry. She also has fourteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Janet has two sisters, Ruth Lyman and husband David, Sandra Doherty and husband James, several nephews, one niece, and several great nieces and great nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10am on June 6 at Skowhegan Federated Church, Island Avenue, Skowhegan with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Interment will follow at South Side Cemetery, Skowhegan.
