Jean was born on August 6, 1922 in Montclair, New Jersey to the late Robert and Mildred (Ora) Krouse. During her childhood she lived at the Grover Cleveland Birth Place where her father was caretaker, of which she was very proud.
After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School in 1941 she joined the WAVES to serve proudly during World War II. Jean married Joseph Smith on May 15, 1948 in Caldwell where Kathleen and Jeffrey were born. In 1958 Jean and Joseph moved to Rockaway Township (not Jean’s idea) and they had another child Steven; Jean would say if she was going to live in the “sticks” she needed another child. Jean was a strong supporter of Joseph and took care of the home and family so he could finish his education and eventually become president of the local savings and loan.
Jean learned to love Rockaway Township throughout the years and did not leave until recently when she needed more care. She encouraged her children to have a spiritual life and supported this endeavor by becoming one of the longest standing members of the First Presbyterian Church of Rockaway. She nurtured beautiful flower gardens and she hosted many barbeques in the backyard. Jean’s grandchildren have fond memories of the barbeques and swimming in the pool. Throughout Jean’s life she would care for others to ensure they were happy. At Christmas time her grandchildren would eagerly watch for their packages with her famous Christmas cookies. In addition, her grandchildren loved spending special individual time with her.
Jean loved all aspects of New Jersey especially the Jersey shore. She lived in only three homes in New Jersey until she came to Waterville, Maine to be cared for by Northern Light Continuing Care, Lakewood where her granddaughter Mandy is an employee; Mandy lovingly checked on her often and would exchange stories while Jean enjoyed a glass of red wine after dinner.
While at Northern Light Continuing Care, Lakewood Jean was honored for her service during World War II in the WAVES organized by Lakewood’s Life Enrichment Director and Beacon Hospice. Although typically reserved, Jean shared many stories about her time in the service. Throughout Jean’s life she was patriotic and proud.
Jean was an avid reader particularly American History. She enjoyed traveling throughout the country visiting historical sites and the Holy Land in the Middle East. She was always up for an adventure including a trip to the casino.
Jean is pre-deceased by her husband Joseph, her parents, and brothers William and Robert.
