She was born February 1, 1934 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Joseph I. Blaney and Mary (Mann) Blaney.
She graduated from Girls' High School, Boston, MA in the class of 1954 and went on to graduate from Boston City Hospital School of Nursing.
Joan married Vincente L. Sy, M.D. spending 63 years together in marriage until his passing in 2018.
She worked at Boston City Hospital before moving to Maine where she was a nurse for SD Warren and then spent many years working as a nurse in her husband's practice.
Joan and her husband were both pilots. She loved quilting and enjoyed time with her quilting friends. She also volunteered at the food cupboard for many years. Joan was an avid knitter and crocheter and a wonderful cook. Her biggest joy was the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family is her legacy and meant everything to her.
She is survived by her family, Vincent A. Sy of Cumberland Center, Maine, his children: Vincente and Branden; Louis Sy of South Portland, Maine, his children: Amanda and Anthony; Richard Sy of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, his children: Richard Jr., Francis, and Philip; Theresa Sy Bugay of West Lafayette, Indiana and her children; Christopher, Ryley, Kyle, and Samantha; Lydia Sy of Waterville, Maine, and her children ; Chad, Jessie, Ryan, and Taylor; Five Great Grandchildren; her Sister, Margaret Carey of Middleboro, MA; and dozens of Nieces and Nephews in the Philippines and United States.
She is predeceased by brothers, Joseph and Robert, and sister, Eleanor.
Viewing hours will be held on Friday February 15, 2019 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday February 16, 2019 at 10 a.m. at the Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Water St., Skowhegan, Maine. Burial will be held in the spring at the Calvary Cemetery.
