Jose de Sousa Melo

Jose de Sousa Melo, 91, of Dartmouth, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Maria E. (Oliveira) Melo.
Born in Salga, St. Michael, Azores, the son of the late Jose de Sousa Cordeiro and Alexandria (Adelide) Cordeiro. He immigrated to Canada in 1954 and then to the United States in 1968.
Mr. Melo was educated in Portugal and served in the Portuguese Army.
Mr. Melo was a talented 3rd generation carpenter. He was the proprietor of Jose Melo & Sons Construction Company, retiring in 1996, leaving his business to his sons to continue his legacy.
Jose loved fishing, carving wood, traveling, trips to the casinos, fixing watches and eating his favorite ice cream, Black Raspberry. He was an avid Benfica fan and was a member of the New Bedford Sports Club. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren whom he adored.
His family includes his children, Carlos “Carly” Melo and his companion Stella Dias, his late son, Antonio “Tony” Melo and his wife Lori, Ricardo “Ricky” Melo and his wife Wendy, Maria S. Melo and her companion Kenny Macedo and Daniel “Danny” Melo and his companion Tania DeSousa all of Dartmouth; his sister, Lourdes Sousa and her husband Jose of Dartmouth and late sister Ida Cosme; his grandchildren, Ryan, Richard, Mathew, Marc, Jasmine and Brendin Melo; and several nieces and nephews.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 9 a.m. from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. Burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
