Born in Fairhaven, a daughter of the late Joaquim and Victoria Tavares, she lived in South Dartmouth for over 50 years. A seamstress for the former Elco Dress in New Bedford for 25 years retiring in 1983, she was a member of the IOLGWU.
She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and a Club Member of the Council on Aging in Dartmouth. Mrs. Tavares loved soap operas and music – and especially enjoyed the singing of Englebert Humperdinck!
Surviving: Son George S. Tavares and his wife Marjory of Westport, MA, daughter Claudia M. Darmofal and her husband Joseph A. of So Dartmouth, brother Joseph August of Texas, grandchildren Sharlene and George, great grandchildren Matthew, Alex, Madison and Blake and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday September 21, 2010 at 8:00 AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd. Dartmouth followed by a funeral mass at 9:00 AM in St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth St. Dartmouth. Visiting hours Monday 4-7 PM. Burial in Rural Cemetery New Bedford.
