Serafim J Correia

Serafim Joseph Correia, age 73 of South Dartmouth, MA, passed away at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital on January 8th, 2022 in the presence of his beloved wife of 47 years and immediate family. His battle with cancer/serious medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile.

He was the son of the late Jordão and Maria Assuncão Correia of Fairhaven, MA. He was predeceased by his two brothers Anselmo Joseph Correia from Mansfield, MA in 1994 and Gonçalo Joseph Correia from Alexandria, VA in 2021. Born on October 12, 1948 in the city of Machico, Madeira he immigrated with his parents and brothers to the United States in 1960 and settled in Taunton, MA. He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth (SMU class of 1976), where he received his degree in Accounting and met his wife, Maria Theresa Correia of South Dartmouth, MA, whom he married in 1974 at St. Mary’s Church in South Dartmouth, MA.

Serafim was a beloved husband, father, accountant and friend. He spent over 25 years employed by Berkshire Hathaway where he started as a Personnel Manager and left as Treasurer of Finance to start his own Accountancy practice and has continued to practice accountancy until the time of his passing. He was affiliated with many organizations over his lifetime, specifically the South End Business Association, where he acted as Treasurer for many years, Clube Sport Madeirense where he also held the position of Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer in recent years and was also a lifetime member of Clube SS Sacramento.

Serafim had a spirit of adventure, was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed International Soccer, support the New England Patriots, watched and played Tennis and enjoyed swimming in the ocean. He never declined a walk out in nature, spent many nights dancing with his wife at Café Portugal and supported his daughters in music as a member of the Dartmouth School Music Association. He enjoyed vacations with his family, from earlier car trips to recent camping adventures on the East Coast. A perfectionist, his attention to detail was paramount even if it took twice the amount of time.

He was exceptionally motivated by the people he served and loved tax law; working with his clients over the decades who became extended family friends. A generational accountant, he took great pride in supporting his clients and families in the community to plan and finance their dreams.

Serafim had fond memories of growing up in Machico, Madeira and maintained connected to local communities and organizations that represented his homeland. He spent the next 60 years as a proud citizen of the United States and was forever grateful for the opportunities his adopted country gave him.

He leaves behind his three daughters; Kimberley A. Correia Hunt of London, UK and her husband Marcus R. W. Hunt. Angela M. Correia of North Dartmouth, MA and her husband Paulo J. Rosas. Christina L. Correia of Weymouth, MA and her partner John F. Pomar. His five grandchildren that he cherished; Isabelle Sophia Hunt, Emilia Naomi Hunt, Olivia Grace Rosas, Tiago Jose Rosas, Amalia Noelle Pomar. His in-laws Jose A. and Noemia A. Figueiredo, sister-in-laws Custodia C. Correia, Lesley N. Correia and Feliciana A. Figueiredo and his beloved nephews Joseph and Michael Correia. He leaves behind many wonderful friends and business contacts who meant a great deal to him.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the team at Dana-Farber, specifically Dr. Matthew B. Yurgelun and Nurse Practitioner Molly Nestor, for their incredible commitment to the fight against cancer and their contribution to Serafim’s care. Future arrangements for another celebration of life will be scheduled as wished by Serafim.

Serafim’s Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 17, 2022 at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, 795 Dartmouth Street, Dartmouth. Relatives and friends are invited.
