Barbara Anthony Burger, 92, died peacefully on June 11. She was the widow of Robert (Bob) Burger and is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Jean and Bill Romeo and Caroline and Chris Beals, and her beloved grandchildren, Jenna Romeo, Casey Romeo (Erin), Allison Beals, Olivia Beals, and Christopher (CJ) Beals.
Barbara was born to Louise and Chester Anthony and raised in the Astoria section of Queens, New York. She graduated from Queens College. While raising her two daughters on Staten Island, she earned a master's degree and became an elementary school teacher. She received a second master's degree from The Pratt Institute in Library Science, and then spent the remainder of her teaching career in an elementary school library sharing her love of books with countless numbers of students.
Barbara met her husband Bob at a social dance and they were married for over 60 years. They loved to travel, and particularly enjoyed going to Prince Edward Island and Switzerland. Barbara and Bob discovered Cape Cod when their daughters were young, and for many years the family spent summer vacations there. They retired to their home in East Dennis and Barbara’s love for the natural beauty of Cape Cod knew no bounds. She and Bob belonged to walking and bird watching groups and were active members of the initial efforts to preserve Crowe's Pasture. They loved hosting bocci tournaments in their backyard and Barbara regularly rode her bike to Sea Street beach in East Dennis for a late afternoon swim. She and Bob were also avid supporters of the arts and frequented performances at the Cape Cod Playhouse, the Cape Rep Theater, and the Cape Symphony. They were also longtime members of the First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universal Church.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, details to follow.
