Elizabeth S. Sadler (nee Johnson), 103, known to her friends as Betty, died at home on March 31,2021. She was one of 7 children born to Harold H. Johnson Sr. and his wife, Martha (Hodgson) Johnson. She was born on July 2, 1917 in Natick, MA. She graduated from Natick High School, continued her studies at Chandler Secretarial School and worked as a bank teller in Natick. She met the love of her life, Albert H. Sadler at a family baptism in 1939. They were married in May 1942 shortly after Al joined the Army. After 2 years of traveling, Al went overseas and Betty worked at several Shawmut Bank branches in Boston until WWII ended. After the war they built a house in Boxborough, MA where they were living when their daughter, Martha and their son, Roger were born.
In 1956, they moved to Seekonk, MA where they made lifelong friends and had many happy years. They were married for over 62 years when Al died in 2004. Betty was a homemaker when her children were young, volunteering at the local grammar school library, becoming a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Altar Guild at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church. When her children were older, Betty worked for several years at Seekonk Library and a local book store, became a Eucharistic minister, visited local nursing home patients, and provided care and companionship to her visually impaired sister for many years. Her primary focus was always her family.
In 2005, she moved to the Cape to be with her daughter. She joined the welcoming community of Christ Church Episcopal in Harwich Port and continued volunteering at the church thrift shop into her nineties. She was a woman of faith, loving and kind, a 3 time cancer survivor, and likely the oldest surviving Rainbow Girl in MA. She was cheerful, optimistic and always wanted to see what was next, with a Scarlett O’Hara “tomorrow is another day” attitude. She loved chocolate, peanut butter, the color blue, The View, reading, embroidery, cardinals, butterflies, Perry Como, playing the piano, word searches, West Dennis Beach, PBS Nature programs, her friends and most of all her family.
She was predeceased by her parents, her stepmother Grace (Church) Johnson, her brothers Harold (Betsy), Paul, Robert (Dusty), and Roger, her sister Doris, her cherished husband Al, and her beloved son Roger. She is survived by her daughter Martha, and her husband David Williams, her granddaughter Jennie Williams and husband Scott Romer of Dennis, daughter-in-law Mary Sadler and grandson Glen and wife Ashley Reneau and great grandchildren Landon, Leila and Charlotte of CA. She is also survived by her brother Arthur and his wife Anne of NY, brother David and wife Rubiella of Alberta Canada, 5 nieces, 3 nephews and 5 great nieces and nephews. A graveside service is planned later in the year when international travel is again possible.
