James John Costas, Sr., age 81 of Dennis, formerly of Worcester died peacefully on Saturday December 21, 2019, surrounded with love by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Anne (Foster) Costas for 56 years.
In addition to his wife Patricia, Jim is predeceased by his brothers John and George Costas and his sister Helen Murphy. Loving father of Christine Costas-Morrissey and her husband James of South Burlington, VT. Stephanie Parker and her husband David of Dennis, MA and James J. Costas Jr. of Boston. A very loving grandfather to 7 grandchildren. Alexandria, Sheamus, and Demetri Morrissey, along with, Samantha, Sydney, Kimberley and Jonathan Parker. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
Jim was born and raised in Worcester, MA to the late John and Florence (Corey) Costas. He was a graduate of the High School of Commerce where he was an outstanding athlete. He was co-captain and star of the Commerce’s indoor and outdoor track teams and played varsity football. He achieved attention as a member of the National Boys’ Club record-breaking swimming team and won the National Boys’ Club 100-yard freestyle. Upon graduation he attended the University of Maryland where he majored in physical education and continued his outstanding athleticism as a swimmer and in 1960 won the ACC National championship with his team.
While attending college, Jim met his future wife Patricia. They settled in Worcester where Jim began working in the automotive industry with Harr Ford. In 1974 they moved to Burlington, VT where he owned the Burlington Lincoln & Mercury dealership. Jim was an expert in his field and after leaving Vermont he was involved in multiple dealerships across the East Coast.
Jim was a member of the National Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed tennis, golf, boating and the beach. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren during his retirement in Englewood, FL and on the Cape in Dennis.
An 11 a.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday January 4, 2020 at Our Lady of the Cape, 468 Stony Brook Rd., Brewster, MA 02631 with committal service at the Holy Trinity Columbarium in West Harwich, MA.
