Marjorie Elinor (Frank) Shuman was born on October 4, 1916 on Fowler Street in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the fourth child of Abraham and Fanny Frank. She graduated from Brookline High School at age 16 and Wellesley College at 20. She was a chemistry major because in her words, "those were my highest grades so I figured I would go with that". After her application to Harvard Medical School was not considered (they did not accept women at that time) she worked in hematology at Boston area hospitals- the Deaconess, Beth Israel and Mass General. At that time she met a pediatric intern, H. Herman Shuman, and they were married on September 7, 1940. They lived in Fitchburg until Dr. Shuman enlisted in the US Army during World War Two and was stationed in the United Kingdom and France. At war's end they moved to Springfield, Mass where Dr. Shuman began a pediatric practice.
They had four children while Margie with her medical background was known to help out in the office and to take patient's calls when her husband was not available.
She was president of the Springfield Chapter of the Wellesley Club. An active contract bridge player she played all over the world and earned the Gold Life Master. Her international play was capped by playing against the son of Chiang Kai-Shek in the Great Hall of the Imperial Palace in Beijing. She was victorious in that game.
After Dr. Shuman passed away in 1986 she moved to Dennis and one of Cape Cod's oldest homes build in 1692. She was an avid traveler and sailed across the world numerous times.
She is predeceased by her daughter Laura Keith and survived by her daughter Connie ( New York, NY), sons Peter (Ithaca, NY) and John (Brookhaven, NY) and grand-daughters Emily and Lucy Keith ( Los Angeles, CA).
Mrs. Shuman by her own admission was a compulsive reader. "I'll read any and everything in front of me." As a young child she once checked her family's butcher bill to discover an overcharge. When the discrepancy was paid her Mother gave her the cash difference. Marjorie's enthusiasm for life was contagious and her family nickname was "Marvelous Margie".
