Maryellen lost her long battle with glioblastoma on June 18th. The world will miss her courage and example; her heartbroken family and friends will miss everything about her.

Born in New York to Berenice and the late Dr. Charles F. Reiss, she was raised on Long Island, attending St Patricks in Glen Cove and St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay. Maryellen graduated from St Bonaventure College in 1971 with a degree in Education, and received her Master’s degree in Administration from Salem State College in 1978.

Her teaching career began at the Singer Learning Center in Port Jefferson, NY. She moved to MA in 1972 to take a position at SLC in Andover. In 1973 she began teaching in the Stoneham Public Schools, where, except for a 2 year leave when she taught at the American School of Brasilia, Brazil, she spent most of her career. In 2006, Maryellen left Stoneham to take the position of Assistant Principal at Blanchard Elementary School in Boxboro. In 2007 she was named Principal of that school, and retired in 2010.

Maryellen was the founder/owner of the New England Fitness Company, which for over 20 years conducted corporate fitness programs in the greater Lowell area, as well as a daily summer program at the Outer Reach Resort in Truro. NEFC also conducted instructor training workshops throughout Massachusetts.

Maryellen met George Michael Driscoll on Race Point Beach in 1972. They were married in 1974, lived in Chelmsford from 1978-1987 and Westford from 1987-2013. In 2013 they moved to Truro, where they had spent every summer for the last 41 years.

Maryellen was a loving mother of two boys, the doting grandmother of three beautiful grandchildren, and the North Star of her very large family. She was a take-charge person, to whom everyone went when something needed to be done, and done right. She was very active, loved running, tennis, and her long walks through the Cape Cod National Seashore. She was a caring, sensitive, insightful, brilliant woman, with more talents than can be counted.

Maryellen is survived by her husband, son David and wife Marci of Holden MA, son Conor and wife Shaleen, of Easthampton MA, and precious grandchildren Charlie, Declan, and Courtney, who will sorely miss their MeMe.

She is also survived by her mother and step dad Berenice and William Sheerin of W. Hartford CT; sisters Pati Reiss, and Brenda Brennan and husband Gerard of SLC, UT; brother Tim Reiss and wife Martha of Avon CT; brother Terry Reiss and wife Michele of Portland OR; brother Charles Reiss and wife Sally of Hinesberg, VT; 25 nieces and nephews, 18 grand nieces and nephews, and 11 step brothers and sisters.

Dear Maryellen,

I knew you at Blanchard Memorial school and was instantly impressed with your kindness and empathy towards your students and staff. We had wonderful conversations about the role of educators in shaping future leaders.

I will always remember your support in allowing me to bring the gift of healing mindfulness to a school and staff that had suffered great trauma in one difficult year.

Rest In Peace.

I first met Maryellen at a gym class at Provincetown Gym. She was such a sweet person and in the short time I knew her, it quickly became clear what a special lady she was. My condolences to her husband George and the entire family.

Mrs. Driscoll was one of the kindest, most empathetic professionals I’ve ever worked with. She was my supervisor and my daughter’s principal at Blanchard Memorial School. Maryellen was truly dedicated to the well-being of her staff and students. As a person, she was always joyous to be around with and really cared about people. My condolences to the family and Connor, whom we got to know as a young man when he substituted at Blanchard and embodied the kindness and adventurous spirit of his mom. Rest in peace, Mrs. Driscoll, in the eternal sea and sky. So many of us have been enriched by your presence on earth.

"Brother" Mike:
I knew there was something special about you when you first came to #336 North Pleasant Street. "The House" agreed, thus your quick ascendance to the Zeta Nu Presidency. Obviously Maryellen also saw something special. While I never got to meet her, I know full well what a tremendous person Maryellen was. Her obituary provided an appropriate and remarkable tribute to a wonderful woman. You truly deserved each other and were blessed to have almost 50 years together.

Unfortunately our time on Planet Earth is finite. It was moving to read you were holding Maryellen's hand when she took her last breath. Please find a moment to tell her that when your time on Planet Earth is completed, you will reach out and hold her hand forever.

Aunt Maryellen, thank you for being my Aunt, my Godmother, and the most beautiful source of inspiration. You & Uncle George's story was the stuff of fairytales, and as a child/teen I dreamed of someday having a love like yours. Although distance separated our families, the memories I have of you are amazing, and I will cherish them always. Your husband, sons, grandchildren, and entire family will miss your physical presence, but your spirit will be with us always. I love you.

As a teacher at St. Dominic's H.S. during Maryellen's years there, I remember her as a very pleasant young lady, bright, motivated and very enjoyable to talk with outside of class. My sincerest condolences to Maryellen's family and I know you have many, many fond memories to keep her spirit alive in each of you as you continue your productive lives. May she sleep in peace.
