OBITUARY

Susan Ellen Baker

25 August, 1947 – 28 November, 2020
IN THE CARE OF

Doane Beal & Ames

Susan Ellen (Anderson) Baker of Brewster, MA passed away on Saturday, November 28th. She was the beloved wife and best friend of Stephen P. (Steve) Baker.

Susan was born in New Bedford, MA on August 25, 1947, the second daughter of Carl and Alice (Blake) Anderson. Besides her husband Steve, Susan is also survived by her sister Ruth Rego of New Bedford, MA; her two step daughters, Julie (Baker) Geary of Hamilton, MA and Stephanie Baker of North Reading, MA; her son-in-law, Thomas Geary; and three grandchildren (Grammy), Evelyn, Ryan and Ella. She was also the well-loved “Auntie Sue” to her sister’s four sons, their wives and children.

Susan graduated from New Bedford High School in 1965 and Salve Regina University in 1969 with a B.S. in Mathematics. In the Fall of that year she came to Boston and began a 35-year career with the Massachusetts Rating Bureaus (later the Automobile Insurers Bureau). These organizations compiled and reported statistical data for automobile insurers writing insurance in Massachusetts. She was skilled at data management and analysis and served as Statistician and later Vice President of Data Management during her career. It was at the Bureaus where Susan and Steve first met in 1969. Each married and divorced before realizing their compatibility and marrying in 1994. Twenty-six wonderful years followed. In 1990 their house in Brewster was purchased.

Susan retired in 2005 and began applying her talents for organization and management to volunteering on the Cape. She became a Master Gardener (MG) in 2008 and every year since grew and contributed seedlings to the Lower Cape Children’s Garden for its Spring mentoring program. She served on the MG Board of Directors for several years and was the Chairperson for the 2018 and 2019 “Autumn Joy” events which brought Master Gardeners together with various presenters to provide continuing education. She also volunteered at The Corner Thrift Shop in Harwich Center for many years. She captained the Friday group and served on the board overseeing operations.

Whether it was cooking one of her wonderful creations for party guests, teaching kids at the Children’s Garden the basics of container gardening or painting designs on rocks with her grand kids, Susan was always “all-in!” The “Princess” will be profoundly missed, especially by her husband and family!

Private services will be at a future date. Please give to a local charity in Susan’s memory.
