He was a resident of Richboro for more than 50 years. Eugene was born on May 25, 1933, in Dunmore, PA, to his parents, John and Anna Hyduchak Maruschak. During World War II, his family moved to Warminster, PA, so his father could take a job with the Reading Railroad.
After graduating from Upper Southampton-Warminster High School in 1951, he served in the U.S. Army, including a year in Japan during the end of the Korean War. He then earned an accounting degree from LaSalle College (now University) in 1959.
In 1965, Eugene traveled to Mexico City to visit one of his cousins, a U.S. Marine stationed at the U.S. Embassy. During that trip, he met his wife of 56 years, Leticia Judith Bistráin, who was working at the embassy as a bilingual secretary. It was, friends said, “love at first sight.”
He returned to Mexico City to marry her on Dec. 15, 1965. They then moved to Northeast Philadelphia—where, for decades, Eugene was an internal auditor with the Internal Revenue Service–and subsequently moved to Richboro.
His passions included attending Philadelphia Eagles games with friends and relatives during the 1950s and ‘60s, when the team played at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field; bowling; and ethnic food, especially his family’s Slovak specialties, such as pierogies and, thanks to Leticia’s influence, Mexican cuisine.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Cecilia A. Beans and Mary Moran; a niece, Patricia Moran; and his wife Leticia, who passed away August 19, 2022.
He is survived by nine nieces and nephews: Bruce and Robert Beans, William and Michael Moran, and Linda Mullin, all of Bucks County; Thomas Beans of Bend, OR; Michelle Wendig of Logandale, NV; and Marcos Bistráin of Mexico City and Ivan Bistráin of Metepec, Mexico.
A visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the Wm. Rowan Grant Funeral Home, 659 Street Road, Southampton, PA, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m.
