Joy was born in Bryn Mawr, PA, to parents Bertram and Madeline Bowman. She graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1969. Joy attended Montgomery County Community College before entering the work force and ultimately working as an administrative assistant in banking and finance, but her main occupation was as a homemaker, in which she excelled.

Joy was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, James Greenday.
Joy is survived by her son, Brian Greenday (Kathryn); daughter, Katherine Feldmeier (Richard); daughter, Robin Greenday (David); and grandchildren, Jadyn Fritz, Anna Greenday, Faith Greenday, Jessie Feldmeier and Eric Feldmeier.
