He had been a resident of Warminster PA. since his marriage in 1962. Melvin graduated from West Pittston High School in 1958. He then attended and graduated from Bloomsburg State College where he Captained the Huskies Football team and met a cheerleader named Kathleen Sinkler.
Melvin married that Cheerleader, the former Kathleen Sinkler, in 1962, celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary on Oct 12th, 2020. They have two children Michael (Phoebe) Montanye of Gilbertsville, PA, and Eric (Suzanne) Montanye of Wayne, PA. They have 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Hitchcock of Wyoming PA.
Melvin received his Master of Education from Temple University and his Graduate Certificate for Principalship from Lehigh University. He began his teaching career in Centennial School District leading the accelerated program. Following that position, he began working for Penn State University as the director of Student Teaching for Centennial School District. His career as a Principal began in the Bensalem School District, opening the brand new Valley Elementary School and finishing his career at Rush Elementary School, where the Library bears his name, retiring in 1998.
Melvin’s faith in Christ was always at the forefront of his life, serving as a Deacon for Dotterer Memorial Baptist Church and later as an Elder for Davisville Church. He continued to teach Sunday school and Bible Studies as well as volunteering as a counselor for Joni and Friends camps, a ministry serving the disabled. He was an active member of the Churchville Rotary club where he served as President.
A memorial service will be held at a later date with the hope that friends and family will be able to collectively celebrate Mel’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mel’s name can be made to Joni and Friends through their website at joniandfriends.org.
