Born on September 8, 1944, Ron was the son of the late Jay and Gloria (nee Tatem) Whitsel. Ron grew up with a love of baseball, beginning in little league and continuing to play throughout high school. He graduated from Council High School in 1962, and went on to Drexel University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He established a long and dedicated career with the federal government as a mechanical and electrical engineer. He first worked with the U.S. Naval Ship Engineering Center for the Philadelphia Division, then at the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, PA. He later spent two years with a local “Beltway Bandit” called Veda, followed by ten years at Total RF, a local TV production company—continuing his work throughout as an electrical and mechanical engineer. He retired in 2011.
Throughout his adult life, Ronald enjoyed many interests and hobbies. He was associated with the Pack Rats amateur radio club, where he developed over 100 contacts, many from throughout the world. He also loved woodworking, fishing in Ocean City, gardening, attending antique car shows, and photography. A loyal sports fan, he loved the Phillies and the Eagles.
Ronald was known for his expansive skills and was someone who could fix almost anything - cars, household items, and construction projects alike. He was especially respected for his ability to build and repair amateur radios for himself and his ham radio friends, leaving a legacy of skill, generosity, and quiet dedication that will be long remembered.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Lynne Whitsel; his daughters, Kimberly Nave (Jerry) and Kristin Hallgren (Karl); and his grandchildren, Mikaela Velez (Jonathon), Daniel Rottina, Jacob Rottina, Anna Rottina, KJ Hallgren, and Carter Hallgren.
