

He was born February 8, 1948 in Memphis, TN to the late Warren and Bessie Scott.
Tom was born and raised in Memphis, hence his love of Elvis and barbecue. A graduate of Central High School, he was Student Council Vice President and captain of the basketball team, but most importantly, met the love of his life Carol at age 14. He attended Washington University on a scholarship and spent time in San Francisco while serving in the Army. He then moved to Philadelphia where he devoted his life to education, as a math teacher and vice principal in the School District of Philadelphia and later, principal at W.B. Saul High School. He was a member of the the AAAS Project 2061 team to improve science education, and served on the Agricultural Education Advisory Committee and the No Child Left Behind/Comprehensive CTC Task Force. He coordinated participation for his students in the PA Dept of Education trade missions abroad and developed the Longwood Gardens High School Internship Program. In 2003 he was awarded the Rose Lindenbaum Improvement in Education Principal Award. After 34 years in education, he enjoyed his retirement years in Southport, NC playing tennis and golf. In addition to his family, he loved music of all kinds, Duke basketball, a good book, Tastykakes and conversations with his many friends.
Survivors include wife of 45 years, Carol Furchgott Scott; two daughters, Molly Fisher and husband Marc of Arlington, VA and Jessica Porto and husband Martin of Groton, MA; son Benjamin Scott of Denver, CO; a brother Warren “Bud” Scott and a sister Wanda Lenoir, both of Memphis, TN; and four beloved grandchildren, Julia, Grace, Owen and Lucas.
Preceding him in death was his brother Bill Lawing and a sister Betty Ferguson.
A celebration and memorial will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the Members’ Club at St. James at 9 am.
