Dear Marie & family,

Profound condolences - I was deeply saddened to learn this news. 

Joel was truly one-of-a-kind. Two of many stories come to mind:

We were meeting with the (somewhat abrasive)  Development Director of a very large Toronto hospital. Joel handed her his business card and she promptly picked her front teeth with it and handed it back. Smoothly, and without comment, he popped it back in his pocket and carried on. I don’t think we landed that account though. 

I was working on a critical software project and the office was proving to be too distracting. So a colleague and I and lots of hardware were relocated to Joel’s Hoyle Ave dining room so we could focus. I bought some muffins for us at a local grocery store as we were going to be there for several days. The next morning, my muffins had been pitched and replaced with the most delicious home made orange-chocolate muffins I’ve ever had. That was classic Joel! 

So many wonderful memories of working at KTS and Joel was an integral part of all of it. From jeans days and his Camp Director mentality to the lavish year end parties, effort was made to make the employees feel valued and that they were truly part of something bigger. He left a mark on many lives and, in doing so, lives on.

My condolences to the family. Very sad to hear this news. I remember Joel from my time at KTS. Joel was inspirational, motivating and an all round great guy to work with. May God rest his soul.
