Eugene D. Sutherland

Eugene Daniel Sutherland of Sparta died at his home surrounded by his loving family on October 7, 2013. Eugene was born in Staten Island, NY. He attended NY grade and high schools to 1944; attended Bishop Laughlin High School, Brooklyn, NY; attended City College of New York on the GI Bill after his military service. Eugene was a member of the Merchant Marines during WWll, 1944-45, joining at the age of 16. He served as a member of the US Army Paratroopers in the 82nd Airborne Infantry; being honorably discharged in 1947. Eugene had a long history in the corrugated box industry. He worked at International Paper; Schiffenhaus Brothers; and Sutherland Packaging, (previously Sutherland Poly-Box), 1963-present. Eugene was the founder of the Highlands Workshop; a board member with Birth Haven; member of Pope John High School Booster Club and Finance Committee; Member of Our Lady of the Lake Church; a patron of Rev. Brown School; and a 50 year member of the Lake Mohawk Golf Club. He is predeceased by his beloved son; Peter John Sutherland and his brother Joseph Sutherland. Eugene is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Ann (Reilly) Sutherland; devoted children: Eileen and Josh Brupbacher; Michael and Joanna Sutherland; Thomas and Irene Sutherland; Daniel and Therese Sutherland; Margaret and Michael Keller; Joseph and Anna Sutherland; and Patrick and Sonali Sutherland, 15 loving grandchildren and 4 adoring great grandchildren. Friends may call Thursday, October 10th, from 2-4, 7-9pm at the Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta, NJ 07871. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30am Friday at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 294 Sparta Ave, Sparta, NJ.
