

Dorothy Blair Nowak, age 90, was born April 25, 1921 near Kahlotus, WA to Cyril and Wilhelmina (Wiziczorek) Blair, the youngest of fifteen children. She loved riding her horse “Socks” in the place known as Horse Heaven Hills. She graduated from Kennewick High School in 1938 and Sacred Heart School of Nursing in 1941 and began working at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco. During WWII she worked at Alcoa Kaiser. In 1943 she went to work at Hanford and met her husband of 32 years, Theodore while he was working on the Manhattan Project. She and Ted married February 2, 1945 and shortly thereafter moved to St. Louis where Ted attended medical school. While in St. Louis she worked at Ferman de Loge Hospital. Ted was soon drafted to the Korean War and they were stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco. After the war they returned to Spokane where she worked at her husband’s medical practice and in her later years at Good Samaritan in Spokane Valley. Dorothy loved to cook, garden and golf. She was an avid historian and spent hours reading her books. She had a quiet life in her home in Liberty Lake until moving to the Guardian Angel in 2009 with her beloved cat “Stripey”. She went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ peacefully on Monday, August 29th, 2011. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Theodore Nowak, MD, her parents, Cyril and Wilhelmina Blair, and her fourteen brothers and sisters. She is survived by her devoted and loving children, son Tom and Christine (Harrington) and daughter Mary Borden. Grandchildren, Jennifer Waiters, Matthew Nowak, Katrina and Cory Borden, Terra and Rachel Cunningham. Gabriel, Daniel, Abigail and Sean Michael Harrington and six great grandchildren. A vigil will be held Thursday, September 8th, from 12:00 until 4:00 PM, the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM in the Colonial Chapel of Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 302 S. Adams Road, on Friday, September 9th, at 10:00 AM, interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
