Doug graduated from Fife High School in 1960, he then served as a Paratrooper in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1967-1969. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service during this time. After the war, Doug decided to join the Seattle Police Department in January of 1970. While working, he attended Bellevue Community College obtaining his Associates degree and then attended Seattle University where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1973.
On June 15, 1973 Doug married his beautiful bride, Renee at the Hitching Post in Coeur d’Alene, ID. Their love and respect for each other was evident to anyone who met them. They settled on Port Orchard, Washington to raise their family. They had two daughters, Amanda and Nicole. This year, they would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. In 2008, Doug helped his daughters celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary with a surprise renewal of the vows, everyone was surprised he kept that secret! He loved telling all about how her “short skirt and hip wiggle” was what drew him to her. He would light up at the sight of her up until the very end, telling her she was beautiful and he would make sure she was safe.
Doug loved dancing, boating, playing pinnacle with friends and family, golf and good food. He loved learning and was known to not only carry around one, but usually two or more books at once everywhere he went. He could also finish almost any crossword in the newspaper. He loved to laugh and joke around with others. He knew when to be serious, but also knew how to have fun and relax with his family & friends. He wanted others to know they were loved and appreciated. He would often leave notes or write letters for loved ones (especially his daughters) telling them how special they were. Many of the family pets brought home were rescues, so his kindness was not only for humans but to animals as well.
In January 1998, Doug retired as Captain of the Seattle Police Department after 28 years of service. One of his proudest accomplishments during his time was to be invited to the FBI Academy in 1990. After retirement, Doug & Renee moved the family to Billings, Montana. They eventually bought a second home in Arizona to winter with their friends. They enjoyed that for a few years, but then it was time to sell their home in Arizona and Billings and follow their daughters to Spokane, Washington.
Doug enjoyed spending his last years with his family especially his grandchildren, Tyler and Ireland and passing along all his knowledge to whomever would listen.
Doug will be missed greatly by his family and friends. He is survived by: his wife, Renee; daughters Amanda (Kris) and Nicole (Jason) and grandchildren, Tyler and Ireland.
