Roy Eugene
''Dick"
(Age 93)
Born July 1st, 1923 on a small farm near Poplar Bluff, MO, Roy was the second of three boys for Margaret and Stephen. Nathan, Roy and Bill were mere babies when their father took ill and died. Forced to leave them behind with grandparents, 'Maggie' ventured West to seek work. Roy and his brothers helped in corn fields, living off their small garden, hunting rabbits and squirrels, and raccoons for the skins. Their mother was finally able to buy a little house in Spokane and send for the boys. She valiantly endured brutal working conditions in the meat packing plant to keep them together. Roy recalled in wonderment the time she bought brand new bikes for all three, which gave them a favorite pastime and Roy had a newspaper route. He graduated from Rogers High in 1942 after a 6 month stretch in the CCC. He fixed up old cars and was interested in radios and electricity. All served him well in the Navy as he was trained as an aircraft mechanic in Norman, OK and then stationed on Oahu in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack. He was proud to earn his pilot license, and began his hobby of HAM radio with Morse code. On leave in Spokane, it was on a blind date with his brother, Bill, and Edith Eliason, that he met Dorothy Duell and they corresponded for the next 18 months. After his discharge he rushed back to spend Christmas with her. They were married May 5th, 1946. He worked as a maintenance electrician at Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood for 30 years. While raising their family in the house he built in the Valley, they enjoyed bowling, fishing, and keeping up the yard and garden. His family will never hear a lawn mower without thinking of him! It wasn't until after his retirement in 1982 that he taught himself to play tennis which he continued until the age of 88. He and Dot were avid bridge players at Spokane Valley Senior Center until he lost her on March 9th, 2016 just short of their 70th wedding anniversary. They are survived by children, Daniel (Griselle-RIP), Rick (Jean), Laura (Tim) Wick and numerous grand and great-grandchildren. Memorial Service on Friday, April 14th @ 2PM in the Barn at Guardian Angel Homes in Liberty Lake. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to Hospice of Spokane, PO Box 2215, Spokane, WA 99210.
Arrangements under the direction of Hazen & Jaeger Valley Funeral Home-Pines, Spokane, WA.
