Alfred Martin Kummer age, 95, Our Dad passed from this life at Holy Family Hospital on April 29, 2011, with his family at his side. He was born in Waterville, WA on February 25, 1916 to Karl and Louisa Kummer. In 1919 the family traveled 3 days by horse and buggy (camping at times with the Indians at night), to Deer Park, WA (Findley Road) where he grew up working on the family dairy farm. Dad is the last surviving 1933 graduate from Milan High School. In 1944, he married Janette Stevens; together they owned and operated the Chattaroy Store, from 1947 to its closure in 1976. Dad will always be remembered for his “Al Kummer” sense of humor and he loved all the after school boys who “camped out” on the Coke machine, brought snakes into the store (he hated snakes) and wrestled with them when they tried to pull out his chest hairs. In that environment Dad taught us a terrific work ethic. Dad took us on Sunday drives, picnics, taught us to water ski at “the river”, never missed our high school activities and was always there for us. Dad was a rural mail carrier in Chattaroy for 17 years. He was also a 33 year retired Volunteer Fire Fighter for District #4. There was a special spot in his heart for all his grandkids and loved to watch the great grandkids come-along. He spent many many hours latch hooking rugs for the kids, grandkids and friends. He played weekly pool and cards for many years. Preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Janette, and great grand daughter, Lily Adlesperger. He was also the last Kummer sibling standing. Brothers and sisters, Lena, Ida, Carl, Selma and Herb passed on before. Dad is survived by daughter, Lorene Wissink (Pat) of Chewelah, WA, her children, Jeff, Marty, Jodi, Misty and Steven, their children, Jesse, James, Josh, Elizabeth, Tommy, Lindsey, Steven and Ryan, their children, JJ, Robbie, Kylee, Luke and Scarlette. Daughter Marcia St.Amand (Rick) of Chattaroy, WA, her children, Michael and Patrick, their children Rachel, Zack, Sam, Jake, Margaret and Bridget. Son Mark Kummer (Shelley) of Spokane, WA and his children, Beth and Kim. Private internment will take place at the Chattaroy Cemetery. Memorial services will be held on May 28, 2011 at 11:00 am, at the Chattaroy Church. Memorials may be made to the Chattaroy Fire Dept, 3219 E. Chattaroy, Chattaroy, WA 99003. “Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal” From an Irish headstone. We miss you Dad!. Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home 1306 N.
