Robert Clinton Pounds

Bob was born July 11, 1929, in Spokane, WA, to Herman and Flora Pounds. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1947 and went on to attend Washington State College on an ROTC scholarship graduating with a BS in Civil Engineering. After college, he went into the Army Corp of Engineers as a 2nd lieutenant serving in the Korean War, where he led a platoon of combat engineers and commanded the area PX. He continued to serve in the Army Corps of Engineer Reserves for 40 years until he retired as a lieutenant colonel.

After the war, he was hired by the City of Spokane as a civil engineer, where he worked for 40 years. During that time, he worked for the water department helping design water tanks. He was also the acting director of the Civil Defense and later director of Spokane Emergency Services.

He also worked a part-time side job as an usher at the Spokane Coliseum.

He married Druzena “Dru” Pounds in Spokane on May 25, 1957, at Bethel Nazarene. They had four children.

Bob grew up attending Hayes Park United Methodist Church. He began attending Bethel Nazarene after marrying Dru. He later became a member of Bethel and was actively involved in the life of the church as an usher, softball team member, choir member, and money counter. He dedicated his life to following Christ in 1986 during an evangelistic service under the preaching of Rev. John David Hicks.

His interests and hobbies were many. He loved sports, music, and exploring the back roads of Washington and Idaho. He was a member of several bowling leagues and won trophies for his efforts. He was an original member of the Spokane Falls Community Band. He loved watching his beloved Cougars, Zags, Mariners, and Seahawks, and he enjoyed seeing his children and grandchildren participate in sports and music. He loved softball and played for the city water department and with the church team before retiring and becoming an avid spectator.

Bob will be remembered for his quick wit and “groaner” jokes that brought a smile to anyone who would listen. He loved the Lord and his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Dru of Spokane; sons Thomas (Mila) of Grants, New Mexico; Mark

(Kathy) of Oakridge, Oregon; Michael (Sheryl) of Spokane; and daughter Mary Beth (Terry) Prince of Marsing, Idaho; sister Janice (Floyd) Kendrick of Spokane; sister-in-law Janine Pounds of Pasco; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nephews, and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Flora Pounds and brothers David and Roger Pounds.

A graveside service will be held at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery at 11:15 AM on Friday, January 17. A celebration of life service with military honors is scheduled for 11:00 AM Saturday, February 18, at Bethel Church of the Nazarene. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Bethel Nazarene
