Augustus John Young, 95, of Spring Hill, died Thursday, November 23, 2017 at the Spring Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center, with family by his side. He was born on June 15th, 1922 in Aqueduct, New York, the son of Gustus Franklin Young and Elsie Dotzler.
Augustus, or "John" as he was commonly known, was a graduate of John Adams High School in 1940 and St. John’s University in 1943. From St. John’s he entered the war, joining the Army’s 20th Armored Division and receiving an honorable discharge in 1946, as well as a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Ten days later, he would meet his future wife, Virginia, in line for sign-ups at St. John’s University School of Law.
Also in 1946, John entered the New York Police Department, where he patrolled the 112th (Maspeth) precinct, then transferred to the 103rd, in Jamaica, and began attending law school while continuing full-time as an officer. As a lawyer he joined the NYPD’s Legal Bureau, then departed twelve years later, in 1964, to join the legal arm of Pinkerton, where he rose all the way to General Counsel in 1978. He retired in 1988, at age 65. It was a long and colorful career, with stories enough to fill a large book, which he eventually completed and had published in 2008. (AJY: My Life As I Lived It is available at the Spring Hill Public Library).
In retirement John and Virginia relocated to Spring Hill, Florida. John remained active in the community for many years, a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and, eventually, the digital revolution – joining the Hernando County Computer Club as their oldest living member.
John and Virginia were always so proud of their family. Together, they attended more sporting events than one would think possible, and never missed an occasion for bringing their large family together on holidays. John, in particular, revered Thanksgiving, his seat at the head of the family table, and his annual turkey leg. He passed away on Thanksgiving Day, 2017.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Young was preceded in death by his sister Helen Harriet, and his wife of sixty-eight years, Virginia P. Baumann.
He is survived by daughters Christine Milliken, of Arlington, VA, with her husband, John; and Nancy Young, of Spring Hill; and sons Charles A. Young of Denver, NC, with his wife, Elissa; John J. Young of Charlottesville, VA, with his wife Nancy; and Greg E. Young of Ridge Manor, FL; as well as nine grandchildren (Bryon, James, Scott, Michelle, Jaclyn, Matthew, Alex, Alicia and Andrew) and six great-grandchildren (Vicente, Jaiden, Damien, Aubree, Bennett and Teagan).
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Spring Hill Hospital and Spring Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center for their great care and attentiveness, guiding John through his stroke in October, and a difficult recovery which earned him valuable time with his family.
Family and friends will gather for visitation and service at Turner Funeral Homes, Spring Hill Drive Chapel, on Friday, December 1st, from 11am to 1pm. Committal prayers and burial will follow the Friday services at Florida National Cemetery, in Bushnell, FL.
