Verna is preceded in death by her loving husband of 47 1/2 years, Louis Appleton. She and Lou raised their family in Levittown, PA then moved to Brooksville in 1991. She was also blessed to have shared the last 18 wonderful years with her devoted companion and loving friend, John Choate.
Born on April 6, 1930, Verna was raised in Main Township, Columbia County, PA and the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine (Wodjeski) Coffey. Verna was the cherished mother of Patricia Sammarco (Tony) of Lancaster, PA and Wayne Appleton (Janet) of Fairless Hills, PA. She was also the beloved grandmother of Christopher Sammarco (Cindy), Michelle Wile (Cody), Colleen Kaufmann, and Jason Appleton (Ashton). Verna was the proud great-grandmother to Cecelia, Cotalina, Nora, Laney, Ella, Zachary, and Rebecca.
Verna is survived by her sister-in-law, June Coffey and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her sister, Edna Coffey and her brothers, Albert Coffey, Leonard Coffey, and Theodore Coffey.
Verna was a tremendously loving, caring and positive woman who valued God and family. She spent many happy years with Lou traveling in their Airstream trailer, square dancing, and spending time with their family. When they retired to Florida, they learned to play golf and their home looked out at the third tee. When Verna met John, she continued golfing with him for many years. They also enjoyed cheering on their Tampa Bay Rays baseball team. Verna worked for over 20 years as the Manager of the cafeteria at Rohm & Haas’ Engineering Division in Bristol, PA.
Verna will be greatly missed by her family and friends. There will be a private graveside service at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. A Celebration of Life will be held in Pennsylvania later this year.
