Bernhard Storch died in his home on Sunday, November 22. He was 98 years old. He was born in Bochnia, Poland and was a Holocaust survivor as well as a veteran of the Polish Army in World War II. During the war he participated in the liberation of several concentration camps. Following World War II he emigrated to the United States. He was a master tailor for many years and then ran a successful dry cleaning business.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and is survived by his children, Gita Morris and Larry Storch (Jeannette) as well as three grandchildren, Robert Morris (Lya), Joshua Storch, and Rebecca Storch.
Bernhard was a tireless community volunteer and leader. He was active in the Jewish War Veterans (JWV), serving as Post Commander, New York State Commander, and on the National Executive Committee, among others. He was a volunteer speaker for both the Westchester Holocaust Center and the Rockland Holocaust Center. He particularly enjoyed speaking with groups of students, with whom he shared his story and his message of tolerance. He was recognized for his service by numerous organizations and was selected Rockland Veteran of the Year and Post 756 Man of the Year, among others.
Bernhard lost his entire family in the Holocaust and perhaps because of this, his extended family became extremely precious to him. He was always ready to lend a hand, or an ear, or just some encouragement, whenever it was needed. He will be missed by many!
