It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Allen Segall, DVM, of Cairo, NY on August 29, 2025 at the age of 82. Beloved husband of Laura and proud father of the late Jocelyn Segall Chilvers, Rachel Segall, and Ropa, his loving dog.
Peter is survived by his sister, Susan Schwartz, sister-in-law Carol Wolf, his niece Debbie (Rich) Levy, nephews, Brian (Karen) Schwartz, Jason (Beth) Wolf, Spencer (Lusy) Wolf, family and many friends.
Peter grew up in Freeport, Long Island. A true "concrete cowboy," he turned his suburban childhood dream into reality by heading west for veterinary school, where he embraced life on the range among cattle and horses. He earned his veterinary degree from Colorado State University and maintained close ties with his classmates throughout his life, sharing stories of their professional accomplishments and family life. Peter was an enthusiastic member of the Rodeo Club—steer wrestling, riding a Brahma bull, and taking on bucking horses. He loved wearing pearl-snap shirts, cowboy boots, and, of course, working with large animals.
Peter (“Doc”) was a dedicated veterinarian for over fifty years at his practice Hudson Valley Animal Hospital; always checking in with his clients about their animal’s health. Being a veterinarian was never a job; it was a calling and a way of life. He not only loved his patients, but thought of his clients as dear friends.
Peter loved ice hockey, skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, traveling, gardening, and most recently drawing. He was a master at collecting friends from all his endeavors. His fondest wish was to be remembered as a good and caring friend.
After retiring (and many surgeries) Peter, known as “Mando Pete,” became devoted to playing his mandolin and singing, especially bluegrass music. He loved music circles, jamming with friends, concerts and especially Grey Fox Music Festival, where he would pop into many workshops and perform for anyone who would listen.
Funeral services for Dr. Segall will be held on Sunday August 31, 2025 10:45 AM at Hellman Memorial Chapel, 15 State St, Spring Valley, NY 10977. Interment will take place immediately following services at Temple Israel Memorial Park, 75 Van Wyck Road, Blauvelt, NY 10913.
