Ruth was the last of the Amster-Adler kids who grew up across the street from each other – West Prospect St. in Waldwick. My father, Leo Adler, and his sister, Ruth Adler, lived in the apartment above Adler's Dry Goods Store, later renamed Adler's Department Store. The store had been started by their father, Aaron Jacob (Jake) Adler, in 1927, and his wife, Annie Amster Adler. Annie's brother Sol and his wife, Sarah (Sadie) Honig Amster, owned Amster's Prospect Tavern across the street and lived in the apartment above it with their kids, Ethel, Danny, and Ruthie. I think Ruthie was the youngest of the five, so she was known by the family as Little Ruthie (even into adulthood), and my aunt was Big Ruthie, although neither of them cleared five feet. I remember the machine Little Ruthie used in the apartment to set the type (I think) for the Bergen Herald. The Prospect Tavern is still going strong – in fact better than ever – under the leadership of Ruthie's nephew, Norman Levine (Ethel's son). 

Ruthie was kind and funny. Most of all Ruth was a pillar in our community. Being the publisher/editor of The Bergen Herald for many years was only one of many things Ruth was known for.
 
As a woman, Ruth held an incredibly high level position in the world of local journalism at a time when it was uncommon to do. She had the foresight to archive the incredible stories of her community and secure Waldwick's history for her community, The Waldwick Museum of Local History, The Waldwick Historical Society, and for our community's future generations. Now our Ruth is part of history, our history and she will always be remembered.

Her spirit for life,unsurpassed anyone I knew. 
Ruth always looked after the Hair Cottage, when it was closed. And would call us if something didn't look right.
