

Born on May 16, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, Stephen was the beloved son of Jack and Frieda Janis.
Stephen, a lifelong learner, majored in Chemistry and earned a Master of Science from New York University. He dedicated his professional life to education, working as an Earth Science teacher for the New York City Board of Education. He served for 34 years— a career in which he took immense pride and one through which he impacted the lives of countless students.
He was a devoted husband, known for his gentle spirit and thoughtful nature. Above all else, Stephen was a deeply devoted father and grandfather who cherished his family beyond measure. He found great joy in time spent with those he loved most.
Stephen had a lifelong love of sports and was a dedicated New York Mets fan. He was also an avid painter and golfer.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Arleen; his children, Jodi and Robert; his cherished granddaughter, Finola; and his brother, Paul.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, 12 Market St, Saddle Brook, NJ, 07663, on February 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
