

The family and friends of Al Gardner mourn his passing at the age of 63, after a tough battle with cancer. He died at 6:57 p.m. on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at St. John's Hospital. Al and his family would like to acknowledge the many kind caregivers at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield Clinic, and St. John's Hospital. Al was born on November 9, 1948 in Springfield to Rufus H. and Florence S. Gardner. He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Joan; his loving son, Zachary; sister, Mary Ellen (husband, Mickey) Grider; and several nieces and nephews. Al often acknowledged that his quality of life and success were due largely to the love and support of his family, especially the patience and loving care given by Joan and Zack since January. Al graduated from Griffin High School in 1966, University of Illinois Champaign with a degree in Finance in 1970, and St. Louis University Law School in 1974. He served in the Illinois Army National Guard as a 2nd Lieutenant until 1981. He was a Certified Financial Planner. Albert worked in several legal and financial positions during his career, striving to make a difference in the lives of his clients. Most recently, he was employed by Stifel Nicolaus Investments in Springfield. Al would like to thank his many clients and co-workers for their friendship and loyalty over the years. Al was on a number of boards and committees, and was most active in the Springfield Rotary Club, serving as president from 1989-90. His particular interest with the club was reading and literacy programs at Ridgely School. He also coached youth sports and was an adult scout leader over the years. Travel was a particular interest of Al's having visited 49 states and a number of foreign countries. One of Al's passions was taking part in sports. He developed into a reasonably good basketball player and golfer despite a notable lack of athletic ability at an early age. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 3:00 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 3:00 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2012 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield with Rev. Jeff Grant, celebrant.
