

He was born in New Douglas, IL, on October 22, 1939, the son of Wesley G. and Irene (Bodi) Cherry. Andrew married Rose Zanger in Quincy, IL.
Andrew attended The Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) in Jacksonville, IL, and graduated with the class of 1959. He went on to work various jobs, starting at 19 years old at a Mink Farm, followed by carpentry work, a clerk at USPS for 30 years and retired, and continued working after his retirement at The State Journal-Register. Andrew was treasurer for the ISD alumni, president of the Springfield Deaf Club, and was also vice chair for the Springfield Deaf Alumni. In 2024, he was inducted into the ISD Hall of Fame for football. In his spare time, Andrew loved the woods, mushroom hunting, bird and deer hunting, beekeeping, and gardening. He was a hardworking, funny and wise outdoorsman who had a deep love for his family and boxers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wesley Cherry; brother-in-law, James Smith; and nephews, Don and Jon Cherry.
Andrew is survived by his wife, Rose; son, Andrew (Beverly) Cherry of Springfield; daughter, Vicki (Andrew) Selvaggio of Springfield; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Cheryl Smith of Staunton; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and beloved dog, Angel.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 300 W. Central St., Benld, with Fr. Adam Zawadzki, celebrant. Burial will follow at Benld Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fort Donelson National Battlefield, in regards to Major General Washington Cherry.
