

Arthur William "Bill" Winking, 83, of Springfield, died at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center. Bill was born February 16, 1933 in Quincy, the son of Arthur Frank and Florence Damhorst Winking. Bill was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Quincy Notre Dame High School for football, baseball, and basketball and graduated in 1951. He attended George Washington University on an athletic scholarship and went on to earn his B.S. in Business Administration from Carthage College. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was employed by Illinois Bell until his retirement after 35 years of service. Bill was a member of the Springfield Elks Lodge 158. An avid golfer, he played in the local Grasshacker and Elks golf leagues. He was a member of the Church of the Little Flower. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his significant other, Jean Dowell of Springfield; children, Todd Winking of Springfield, Tracey Beagle of Portland, OR, and Teri (husband, Paul) Flynn of New Canaan, CT; six grandchildren, Sarah, Joshua (wife, Megan), and Lydia Beagle; Chase, Hayden, and Preston Winking; sister, Kay Adair of Belleville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Church of the Little Flower, 800 Stevenson Dr., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Church of the Little Flower with Rev. Allen Kemme, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
