Betty Lee (Edwards) Heckenkamp was born January 9, 1925, in Racine, Wis. She was the daughter of Harry and Clara (Augustine) Edwards. In 1933, during the Great Depression, the family moved to Portage, Wis., where Harry had taken a new job. Betty Lee spent most of her school days in Portage. Then, the family moved to Pittsfield, Ill., where she graduated from high school in 1942. After several months, the family moved to Quincy, Ill. Betty Lee attended and graduated from Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill. After Business College, Betty Lee worked as a secretary for several years. She met her husband, the late Robert Heckenkamp, and they were married in 1947. They moved to Springfield in 1959 where Bob started a wholesale florist. They spent 25 years owning and operating Tri-State Florist in Springfield. It was a successful endeavor that allowed Bob and Betty to take 6 trips to Europe and travel throughout the United States.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her parents, one brother, Don Edwards, one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
Betty is survived by three children Tim Heckenkamp of Springfield, Chuck (Sue) Heckenkamp of Pleasant Plains and Nancy (Duane) Bautista of Aliso Viejo, Cal. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren — Katy (Don) Gray, Andy (Madeleine) Heckenkamp, Stephanie (Eric Reiter) Heckenkamp, Christie (Rickey) Davis, Lindsay (Kory) Kovski, Craig Bautista, Kylie Bautista and Emilie Heckenkamp. There are 8 great-grandchildren, Noah and Gigi Gray, Wedge, Washburne and Walker Heckenkamp, Drake and Tripp Davis and Elinor, Joseph and Peter Kovski.
Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield, where visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 from 10:30 am until time of the funeral service at 12:30 pm. Pastor Joshua Traxel will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
