With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Calwin “CJ” James, beloved husband, father, and friend, who departed this world on October 11, 2025, at 6:35 a.m. in his Chatham home after a courageous battle with stage 4 sarcoma. He was 47 years old.
Calwin was born on October 19, 1977, in Kingston, Jamaica, the son of Everton and Parnell.
He graduated from Evanston Township High School and attended Lincoln College where he played soccer. Calwin worked at Golden Corral, where he became known not just as an exceptional server, but as someone who could brighten anyone’s day. His ability to make people smile-even on their toughest days-was truly a gift.
He was a vibrant and energetic soul whose presence could light up any room. Athletic, confident, and endlessly kind, he had a way of making people feel seen, heard, and loved. His laughter was infectious, and his warmth radiated to all who knew him. Calwin was a devoted family man who cared deeply for those closest to him. They were the center of his world, and he never missed a chance to show them how much he loved them, especially with his cooking.
Diagnosed with cancer in 2022, Calwin faced each challenge with strength, dignity, and grace. Though the disease took a toll on his body, it never touched his spirit. His resilience inspired everyone around him, and his bravery will not be forgotten.
Calwin James was, in every way, a beautiful person-handsome, strong, and full of life. His loss leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife, Courtney; his beautiful daughter, Giavonna; his cherished son, Quintin; parents, Everton James and Parnell (Michael) Francis; brothers, Dennis (Elysia) Harris, Vanburn (Omege) James, Nicholas Davis, and Okeeno James; sister, Francene (Odane) Francis; and step siblings, Desmond (Lexan) Francis and Maureen Francis. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Gathering will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL.
