Carol was born in Corpus Christi, TX, August 26, 1945, the daughter of Delphyn R. and Mildred Corinne (Neill) Scott. She married Richard F. “Dick” Herndon in Pentwater, MI, September 4, 1983 and he survives. Also surviving is her cat Spike, extended family and dear friends.
Carol retired in 2001 from SIU School of Medicine where she had served as the Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs. She served for over 30 years as the institution’s staff representative to the Institutional Review Board, at SIU known as SCRIHS. As representative, she was instrumental in the application and processing and acceptance of patients referred for experimental pharmaceutical and medical device treatments, compliant with federal regulations. She received special recognition for her service to the IRB from SIU upon her retirement. She also reviewed external federal and private foundation grant applications for compliance with institutional, federal and agency regulations. Carol also organized and processed internal grant applications with the medical school’s Central Research Committee. She was a liaison between patients and medical staff of the school.
Carol was passionate about nature and conservation. She was extremely active with Lincoln Memorial Garden, as a volunteer, fundraising efforts and a past board president. She was a member of the Audubon Society and served on the board of the downstate Illinois chapter of The Nature Conservancy.
Cremation Rites will be accorded by the Bisch Crematory. A celebration of her life will be held at the Bisch and Son Funeral Home Wednesday, July 10, 2024 beginning at 2 pm with a memorial service at 3 pm. Pastor Martin Woulfe will officiate.
