Born in Springfield, Illinois, on January 7, 1934, Clarke graduated from Springfield High School and went on to earn both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois. He served as President of United Savings and Loan for over 40 years, where he was respected for his steady leadership and unwavering integrity.
Clarke married the love of his life, Jacquelyn (“Jackie”) Woodruff, on November 22, 1958. Their 64-year marriage was a testament to deep affection, mutual respect, and devotion. Clarke never stopped missing Jackie after her passing in 2023.
He was a gentle, loving man with a twinkle in his eye and a calm strength that anchored his family. Clarke was a master of many things—playing the four-string banjo and clarinet in his younger years, and later teaching himself piano, filling their home with music. A gifted woodworker, he built or refinished much of the furniture in their house. He rarely, if ever, needed to call a repairman. He had a lifelong fascination with the stars, once building his own observatory and installing a six-foot telescope for night-long stargazing sessions. Clarke also had a quiet athleticism, running daily for over 40 years—often alongside Jackie and a close circle of friends. He completed 11 marathons with the same determination he brought to all aspects of life.
Clarke is survived by his daughter, Beth Plzak (Max), and their children Alexandra (Sharif), Alec, and Audrey; and his son, Bill (Crystal), and their children Evan and Eric (Laura) and their children Lily and Miles. His grandchildren cherished their time with Papa, who generously shared his love of science, his thoughtful wisdom, and his humble curiosity. He also leaves behind a treasured family friend, Patty Rude, who was like a daughter in recent years.
Clarke will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony.
