Dora Deane “Dot” Hasselbring, 90, of Springfield, passed away on May 12, 2018 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. She was born on December 29, 1927 in St. Louis, MO to Jesse M. and Lorene Mabel Brown Shelton. Dot married Theodore Thomas “Ted” Hasselbring in St. Louis on April 18, 1953 and he survives.
Dot is also survived by her children: Jean (Eric) Brown of Decatur, Janet (David) Sloman of Pawnee, four grandsons: Daniel and Jonathan Brown of Decatur and Garrett (Danielle) Sloman of Carrollton, TX and Matthew (Brenda Chavez) Sloman of Coppell, TX, three great grandchildren: Schaeffer, Charlotte and Beckett Sloman as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Marjorie, Betty and Lois.
Mrs. Hasselbring graduated from Roosevelt High School in St. Louis and attended Riverside Junior College in Riverside, California. In the 1950’s she worked at Merck Pharmaceuticals where she met her husband, Ted.
After moving to Springfield in 1967 she worked for the State Journal Register, retiring after twenty six years of service. Dot and Ted owned and operated the Baskin Robbins in Fairhills Mall from late 1977 until 1993. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield, Trinity Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in La Grange, Illinois.
Dot’s two greatest loves were her family and craft projects. She enjoyed flower arranging, basket making, ceramics, making jewelry and painting. She was a member and Past President of the Springfield Ceramics and Crafts Club, member of Captain William Penny Chapter NSDAR, long time member of Sangamon County Home Extension and a former member and Past President of Professional Secretaries.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday May 19, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran School, 515 South MacArthur Street, with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen Street and a half hour prior to the service on Saturday.
