Dr. Paul E. Smalley

Dr. Paul E. Smalley, 79, of Springfield, died on Thursday, July 19, 2007 at his residence. He was born on February 23, 1928 in Dayton, Kentucky, the son of Paul F. and Edith Jackson Smalley. He married Mary Rita Reinermann on June 17, 1950 in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky. He received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years. He was in general practice in Oxford, Ohio from 1956 to 1960. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts from 1960 to 1963. Dr. Smalley came to Springfield in 1963 to join the Springfield Clinic. Along with Dr. Robert Harp, he established the open-heart surgery program at St. John’s Hospital. He was the Director of Cardiology at Memorial Medical Center and a professor with the S.I.U. School of Medicine. Following his retirement in 1994, Dr. Smalley served as a consultant at the State of Illinois Department of Human Services, Bureau of Disability. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Rita; two sons: Paul E. Smalley, Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri and James (wife, Stephanie) Smalley of Washington, D.C.; two daughters: Mary (husband, Carl) Affrunti of Springfield and Ann (husband, David) Boulay of Omaha, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Family welcomes friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 23, 2007 at Church of the Little Flower, 800 Adlai Stevenson Drive, Springfield, beginning with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m., with Rev. Msgr. John R. Ossola officiating. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Church of the Little Flower, with Rev. Msgr. John R. Ossola and Rev. Robert Porter concelebrants. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Springfield.
